Advance Your Ride by Changing the Hub!

Hello, cycling enthusiasts!

I’m GORI from BROTURES Harajuku. Lately, I’ve been approached by many customers, especially those who’ve recently embarked on their fixed gear journey with a stock bike. They frequently ask, 'Where should I start with customization?'

Let’s get straight to the point, particularly addressing those who’ve been cruising on their stock bike for over a year. The first component you should consider upgrading is the HUB!

I’m not suggesting a complete wheel overhaul; a simple HUB change can revolutionize your riding experience. Imagine elevating your ride to a whole new level, akin to a quantum leap in cycling dynamics. For those unfamiliar with 'super-dimensional soccer,' it’s a nod to a shared cultural reference from the anime Inazuma Eleven. But moving past that, the HUB is the upgrade I passionately recommend.

A custom HUB can significantly enhance your fixed gear bike's performance. Worried about the cost? Fear not. While a full wheel customization can be pricey, a HUB swap is surprisingly affordable.

First, let’s demystify the HUB. Essentially, it’s the round component at the center of your wheel. A typical wheel comprises four main parts: the rim (outer circle), spokes (thin lines radiating from the center), the HUB at the center, and the nipples (connecting the spokes to the rim).

In my view, the HUB is arguably the most crucial component. Why? Because the quality of the HUB directly impacts the wheel’s rotational efficiency. If you’re seeking a smoother commute or faster rides, upgrading the HUB is the way to go! Initially, the idea of swapping rims to carbon or other high-end materials might seem tempting.

However, before diving into such extensive changes, why not start by upgrading the HUB on your current wheel? This simple modification can significantly alter the feel and performance of your ride.

Now, you might wonder, 'Which HUB should I choose for my stock wheel?' No worries, I’m here to guide you. Stock wheels typically come with 32H (32-hole) complete wheels. This means you’ll need 32 spokes, and consequently, your rim will also have 32 holes. The key here is to choose a 32H standard HUB during reassembly – a crucial detail to get right. Remember, changing the HUB often means changing the spoke length, so you’ll likely need to purchase new spokes as well. A single spoke costs about ¥100, so you’d need at least ¥3,200 for 32 spokes.

Today, I’d like to introduce some standout HUBs available at our store:

1. SHIMANO DURA-ACE TRACK HUB F/R ¥ 22,370-/¥ 24,824-(INC. TAX)

First up is the DURA-ACE HUB, a classic favorite known for its high-speed performance. Unique for its adjustable bearing rotation via ball contact, this HUB can really spin once set up properly. And don’t worry about the setup; we handle that meticulously when assembling at our shop. Adored by fixed gear enthusiasts for its NJS certification and reliability, this HUB is an excellent choice for your first foray into customization.

2. PAUL TRACK HUB F/R ¥26,180-/¥31,900- (INC. TAX)

Next is the TRACK HUB by PAUL, a brand renowned for its brake levers. This HUB, featuring shielded bearings, offers a consistently smooth ride right out of the box. Though it might start a bit stiff, it gets increasingly smoother with use. The HUB is also designed for longevity, thanks to its meticulous CNC machining. For those seeking durability and the option to reuse the HUB with different rims, this one’s a perfect match. It’s a HUB that can be passed down through generations!

So, for fixed gear riders still rolling on stock bikes, these HUB upgrades are my top recommendations. While other customizations are worthwhile, swapping out the HUB is a shortcut to experiencing a dramatic improvement in your ride. Beyond these options, we have a wide array of HUBs to suit various needs and preferences. If you’re curious to learn more, don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or Instagram DM. Happy riding!
